Component Architecture

MainPanelLayout
  └── BentoBox
      └── SidecarContainer (type: 'document')
          └── DocEditor
              ├── Header (with save button)
              ├── MenuBar (toolbar with all formatting options)
              └── EditorContent (Tiptap editor)

Technical Details

Tiptap Configuration

const editor = useEditor({
  extensions: [
    StarterKit.configure({
      heading: { levels: [1, 2, 3] },
    }),
    Placeholder.configure({
      placeholder: 'Start writing your document...',
    }),
    Underline,
    TextAlign.configure({
      types: ['heading', 'paragraph'],
    }),
    Link.configure({
      openOnClick: false,
    }),
    Image,
    TextStyle,
    Color,
    Highlight.configure({
      multicolor: true,
    }),
    TaskList,
    TaskItem.configure({
      nested: true,
    }),
  ],
  content: initialContent,
  editable: !readOnly,
});

Props Interface

interface DocEditorProps {
  initialContent?: string; // HTML content to load
  onSave?: (content: string) => void; // Save callback
  readOnly?: boolean;  // View-only mode
  docId?: string; // Unique document identifier
}

State Management

const [isSaving, setIsSaving] = useState(false);
const [lastSaved, setLastSaved] = useState<Date | null>(null);

Auto-save Implementation

useEffect(() => {
  if (!editor || !onSave || readOnly) return;

  const saveInterval = setInterval(() => {
    const content = editor.getHTML();
    setIsSaving(true);
    onSave(content);
    setLastSaved(new Date());
    setTimeout(() => setIsSaving(false), 500);
  }, 30000); // 30 seconds

  return () => clearInterval(saveInterval);
}, [editor, onSave, readOnly]);

Styling Approach

Design System Integration

Uses existing Goose design tokens:

  • bg-background-default
  • bg-background-medium
  • bg-background-muted
  • border-border-subtle
  • border-border-strong
  • text-text-default
  • text-text-muted

Custom Editor Styles

  • Prose-like typography
  • Syntax highlighting for code blocks
  • Visual feedback for task lists
  • Hover states for interactive elements
  • Focus states for accessibility

Future Enhancements

Persistence

Currently, documents are only saved via the onSave callback with console logging. Future implementations could:

  1. LocalStorage

    onSave={(content) => {
      localStorage.setItem(`doc-${docId}`, content);
    }}

  2. Backend API

    onSave={async (content) => {
      await fetch('/api/documents', {
        method: 'POST',
        body: JSON.stringify({ id: docId, content }),
      });
    }}

  3. File System (Electron)

    onSave={async (content) => {
      await window.electron.saveDocument(docId, content);
    }}

Additional Features

  1. Document Management

    • List of recent documents
    • Search documents
    • Document templates
    • Export to PDF/Markdown
  2. Collaboration

    • Real-time collaborative editing
    • Comments and annotations
    • Version history
    • Share documents
  3. Advanced Formatting

    • Tables
    • Footnotes
    • Math equations (LaTeX)
    • Diagrams (Mermaid)
    • Embeds (YouTube, Twitter, etc.)
  4. Editor Enhancements

    • Slash commands (/heading, /list, etc.)
    • Markdown shortcuts
    • Word count
    • Reading time estimate
    • Focus mode (distraction-free)
  5. File Operations

    • Import from Markdown/HTML
    • Export to various formats
    • Attach files/images
    • Drag-and-drop images

Testing Recommendations

Unit Tests

describe('DocEditor', () => {
  it('renders with initial content', () => {
    // Test editor initialization
  });

  it('formats text correctly', () => {
    // Test bold, italic, etc.
  });

  it('saves content on manual save', () => {
    // Test save button
  });

  it('auto-saves every 30 seconds', () => {
    // Test auto-save interval
  });

  it('handles read-only mode', () => {
    // Test read-only prop
  });
});

Integration Tests

describe('Document in Bento Box', () => {
  it('opens document from plus menu', () => {
    // Test full flow
  });

  it('allows multiple documents side-by-side', () => {
    // Test multiple instances
  });

  it('closes document properly', () => {
    // Test cleanup
  });
});

E2E Tests

test('user can create and edit a document', async ({ page }) => {
  // 1. Hover over right edge
  // 2. Click plus button
  // 3. Click "New Document"
  // 4. Type some text
  // 5. Format text
  // 6. Save document
  // 7. Verify content persists
});

Known Limitations

  1. No Persistence: Documents are not saved to disk/database yet
  2. No Document List: Can't browse or reopen previous documents
  3. No Collaboration: Single-user editing only
  4. No Export: Can't export to other formats
  5. Image Upload: Only supports URLs, not file uploads
  6. Limited Undo History: Based on Tiptap's default

Performance Considerations

Current Optimizations

  • Lazy loading of editor extensions
  • Debounced auto-save (30 seconds)
  • Efficient re-renders with React.memo potential

Future Optimizations

  • Virtual scrolling for very long documents
  • Lazy loading of images
  • Web Worker for heavy operations
  • IndexedDB for large document storage

Accessibility

Current Features

  • Keyboard shortcuts for common actions
  • Focus management in toolbar
  • Semantic HTML output
  • ARIA labels on toolbar buttons

Future Improvements

  • Screen reader announcements
  • High contrast mode
  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • Customizable shortcuts

Browser Compatibility

Tiptap is built on ProseMirror and supports:

  • Chrome/Edge (latest)
  • Firefox (latest)
  • Safari (latest)

Electron uses Chromium, so full compatibility is guaranteed.
